Juillet 1761, dans son château de Ferney, Voltaire accueille parmi ses invités, deux ravissantes comédiennes italiennes qui doivent répéter Le Fanatisme ou Mahomet le prophète dans son théâtre de verdure. Il ne veut pas rester sur le demi succès de la pièce à Paris L'été est beau, les nuits tièdes portent aux jeux, au libertinage, aux confidences brûlantes. Le comte prussien Fleckenstein, émissaire de Frédéric II, ne manque ni d'aisance ni d'esprit pour prendre part à cette société enjouée. Mais les poisons violents de la tyrannie religieuse exposés dans Mahomet assombrissent les plaisirs de Ferney et nourrissent la réflexion de Voltaire sur la tolérance. Car partout en Europe, on bataille, on étripe, on massacre (c'est la Guerre de 7 ans)... Un roman élégant, une comédie légère (superbe évocation d'un XVIIIe libertin et brillant) et profonde à la fois (le fanatisme, à travers le prisme de la pièce de Voltaire). Le formidable portrait d'un Voltaire gai, passionné, mais aussi coléreux, fantasque et tourmenté, qui fait feu de tout son esprit pour gagner le combat de la raison, de la tolérance, du bonheur. Formidablement lucide, l'écrivain met en garde sa société exquise contre les barbaries qui menacent et peuvent conduire les hommes vers la fureur, le fanatisme et la guerre.
GOODBYE MR SOCIALISM

Qual è la nuova agenda della trasformazione politica, dopo la fine del modello socialdemocratico, l'implosione dei cosiddetti "paesi socialisti" e l'arrembante globalizzazione? In quali condizioni di salute si trovano le diverse e plurime sinistre mondiali? Per cercare di rispondervi, uno dei più importanti filosofi del pensiero occidentale ripercorre con occhio critico tutte le fasi cruciali che la sinistra si è trovata ad affrontare a partire dal crollo della Cortina di ferro nel 1989: dalla nascita imprevista e sorprendente dello zapatismo all'apparire tumultuoso dei movimenti alterglobalisti, dagli straordinari scioperi anticipatori di Parigi del 1995 alla comparsa in tutta Europa del precariato come nuova forma diffusa del lavoro. "Goodbye Mr Socialism", quindi. Il vecchio modello redistributivo è stato travolto definitivamente dai flutti della storia. Ora si tratta di andare alla ricerca di nuovi modelli e prototipi mentali che possano ridisegnare la via della trasformazione sociale. Il risultato di questa analisi impietosa è però sorprendente. Oggi più che mai vi è spazio di azione per i movimenti dal basso. Perché il potere è strutturalmente diviso, e se pure esso afferma a parole una sovranità assoluta, nella realtà esso si trova continuamente a mercanteggiare lo spazio di azione e di esercizio della sovranità stessa con le spinte centrifughe che nascono nella società. La conclusione è che la trasformazione è ancora possibile, oggi più che mai.
